SDOC Online Student Registration Now Open

The School District of Oconee County has partnered with FinalForms, an online forms and data management service, to allow families to complete and sign enrollment/registration forms for students online.  Parents will also be able to use their FinalForms account to update student information, such as contact or medical information, throughout the school year.  

Parents of returning students that have an email address on file will receive a confirmation email from FinalForms in the next 2-3 days with the information needed to begin registration. The email will contain directions on how to create an account and on how to register each of their students. FinalForms has provided a Returning Student Parent Playbook to help parents with account creation and registration. Parent’s that do not receive an email may call their student’s school beginning Monday, July 26th to begin the registration process.  More information can be found on the ENROLL page ofthe district website.

Students new to the School District of Oconee County may visit the NEW STUDENTS tab located on the ENROLL page of the district website.  Please note: students who have attended an SDOC school in the past but were not enrolled with the district on the last day of the 2020-2021 school year will be considered a new student. 

Many schools will be holding in-person registration events to allow parents to complete other important “beginning of the year” tasks. A complete list of 2021-2022 Registration Dates is available on the ENROLL page of the district website.

SDOC 4K & Kindergarten Staggered Start

Children in the School District of Oconee County 4K and Kindergarten classes will begin school on a staggered start for the 2021-2022 school year.  The purpose of a staggered start is to allow students who are in the early stages of experiencing school to be exposed to school-wide and classroom expectations in a small group. This transition will allow for the first day with their entire class to operate smoothly. A staggered start will also allow the teacher to begin building relationships with his/her students and complete required beginning of the year assessments with each student in a more manageable environment.

From Monday, August 16 through Thursday, August 19th, 4K and Kindergarten students will attend just one day of school.  Then, all students will attend school on Friday, August 20th.  Teachers will contact parents/guardians to schedule what day of the week their child will attend school, schedule parent conferences for 4K students, and review other details about the staggered start procedures. If you have any further questions please contact your child’s school.

SDOC Announces New AP Hires

 

At its regularly scheduled board meeting held on July 19, 2021, the School District of Oconee County Board of Trustees approved the hiring of two new assistant principals for the 2021-2022 school year. 

Antonio Scott

Stanley Antonio Scott, a West-Oak High graduate, will move from his current role as a 5th Grade Teacher to join the administrative team at Northside Elementary School. Mr. Scott holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Anderson University and a Master’s degree in STEAM Education from Clemson University.  Mr. Scott is currently finishing up his Educational Specialist Degree from Clemson University.   He has been teaching for four years, one in Anderson School District 5, two in Greenville County Schools, and one in the School District of Oconee. Mr. Scott was born, raised, and currently lives in Oconee County with his family, Haley, Hayden, and Scarlett. Mr. Scott said, “I am super excited about this opportunity and can’t wait to get started.  I love my Northside Elementary family and can’t wait to serve them as their new Assistant Principal.”

 

 

David DennisDr. David Dennis will move from his current role as testing administrator and career counselor  to join the administrative team at Seneca High School.  Dr. Dennis has 17 years experience in education, with 15 of those in Oconee County.   He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Literature from Wofford College, an Master’s degree in Creative Writing from Queens University, and an EdD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina.  Dr. Dennis lives in Seneca with his wife Graham, a teacher at SMS, and their two daughters Parker and Campbell. "I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity at such a great school as Seneca High School.  I look forward to supporting the good work of SHS faculty and staff in this new position, as well as our parents and community."

 

 

Superintendent, Dr. Michael Thorsland said, “We are excited to welcome Antonio and David to our administrative team and look forward to working with them.  I’m confident they will continue to have a positive impact on their schools in their new roles.”

SDOC Website 

The district will launch a new website platform in early July.  Website addresses, such as www.sdoc.org, will not change but you will find a whole new look upon navigating to our sites.  The new design is based on survey feedback we received from stakeholders.  You will likely see some pages still “under construction” but we are excited to bring our students, families, and community a much more user-friendly platform and look forward to adding features, including an SDOC Mobile app, throughout the fall. 

Student Registration

Student registration will open in late July.  Returning students with an email on file in Powerschool will receive an email with information needed to register. If you do not receive an email for your returning student by the last week in July, please reach out to your student’s school.  New students should refer to the “Enroll” page on the district website. 

Student Meals

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced that ALL STUDENTS will receive free breakfast and lunch for the 2021-2022 school year.  Students will be allowed to get one "reimbursable" school meal (entree, fruits & vegetables, milk) for no cost.  Students will be responsible for the cost of any additional food purchased.  It is VITAL for families to still complete the Free/Reduced Meal Application. The district receives significant federal and state funding that is based on the number of families that qualify for free or reduced cost meals.   These funds provide extra services for our students and families.  We face the possibility of losing HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS in funding if families do not complete an application. Applications for the 2021-2022 school year may be submitted beginning July 1, 2021.  Paper forms will be available at all school locations and the district office in both English and Spanish.  You may submit the APPLICATION ONLINE as well.

The School District of Oconee County will hold a final 4K screening date on Thursday, July 29th. Parents must schedule an appointment to have their student screened. To attend 4K, the child must be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2021. For students who qualify, there is no cost to attend an SDOC 4K program.

Screenings will be held at the Bountyland Education Campus (100 Vocational Drive, Seneca) 

Parents should bring the following items to the screening appointment:

  • Legal LONG form birth certificate

  • Child’s immunization record

  • Proof of income for both parents or child’s medicaid card

  • Proof of residency (Ex. water bill, power bill, or rental agreement)

  • Legal documentation as it pertains to the child (such as custody, court, safety plans, etc)

SDOC Board Honors Mrs. Margaret Brown

The School District of Oconee County Board of Trustees honored Mrs. Margaret Brown, widow of former superintendent James M. Brown, in recognition of the years of support for arts education by the Brown family in the School District of Oconee County. 

Mr. James M. Brown served as superintendent from 1988 until his untimely death in 1994.  During his tenure, he was a strong proponent of providing robust programs in the arts for students.  Mrs. Brown shared, “Jim used to say that some students are good in academics, some are good in sports, but others may shine in the arts. He always wanted to celebrate student success.”

To honor Mr. Brown’s commitment to the arts, the Brown family established the James M. Brown Scholarship for the Arts in 1995. Winners were chosen by  the scholarship committee, consisting of Mrs. Brown, John Kelley, Beverly Robinson, Dr. Bonnie Rushlow, Rick Baumgarner, Sue Maher and various School District of Oconee County administrators after student auditions.   Since its inception, 28 School District of Oconee County seniors have received the scholarship. While originally $1000 a year, renewable for 4 years, the past several years the amount was increased to $2,000 per year.  At least four scholarship winners returned to Oconee County to teach in our schools. 

In 2019, the 25th year of the scholarship, Mrs. Brown and the committee made the decision to end the scholarship and transfer the remaining funds to the School District of Oconee County for use in its visual arts department.  Mr. Stan Dubose, the district elementary art lead teacher, shared that the funds will be used for professional development as well as supplies and materials.  

Dr. Michael Thorsland, superintendent, said, “Our district provides opportunities in the arts for students at all levels.  We can attribute the strength and success of those programs, in large part, to Mr. Brown’s commitment to the arts.  We are grateful for Mrs. Brown and her family’s support for our students.  We’d also like to thank the members of the committee; we appreciate their work and support as well.”

SDOC Announces Summer Meal Options for Students

 Meals will begin on Tuesday, June 15th

Free summer meals for kids

The School District of Oconee County will begin the summer feeding program on Tuesday, June 15th.  Meals will be available for pick up at select schools and community locations. Children will receive a “grocery style” box of food that will make seven breakfasts and seven lunches. Meals are provided at no cost to any child between the ages of 2 and 18 years of age (21 years or younger if disabled). Families are encouraged to choose the location that is most convenient for them to pick up meals. Please note: Meals during the week of July 4th-9th will only be available at the Thursday pick-up locations. Children do not need to be present when picking up meals; parents will need to show some form of ID if children are not present. 
Meals may only be picked up 1 time per week.
